Doodle Buddy iPad App
Doodle buddy is a simple lightweight drawing app that has been optimized for the iPad. Its focus is designed mainly towards children to doodle and create artwork with.
The main window of the app is simple and intuitive. At the bottom of the screen you’ll find a dock similar to that of a Mac system dock. All the tools are located on this dock as well as the system preferences. Tools are categorized by brush type, stencil, background and clip art.
Users can modify the brush tool to have various thicknesses as well as choose between three different types of textures. The eraser tool is also located in this pop out menu. There are over ten color slots to save custom color choices. Each time a new color is selected, the color is added to the custom slot. This is great if a user is reflecting to swap between multiple palettes.
A user can add text with the text box tool. There are four font types to select from; helvetica, times new roman, a type face and a felt. One thing that is bothersome about the text box is that there is no delete tool if you pull out a text box. Since you cannot remove the frame, it is hard to sometimes draw around the box.
What I found most disappointing about this app was the lack of a line tool. This is one of my most used tools when doing any type of drawing or design on a computer. Anyone with a need beyond a brush and text addition should look elsewhere for a more robust tool.
Overall this is a good app to doodle and draw on the go. One review in the app store mentions the awkward placement of the ads. Children can easily click on the ad and sometimes view inappropriate content when an ad is clicked – users beware.
